Is the creation of a false perception of someone akin to libel or defamation of character?

For example, someone using methods such as implying, giving the impression, and/or tricking others to think that an unsuspecting person is , lets say, mad, a witch, criminal or just something they are not.Is the creation of a false perception of someone akin to libel or defamation of character?
Lateral thinking my dear girl.... Use the free ';publicity'; to enhance your aura of different-ness.

Deny nothing..admit to nothing. Shortly you achieve celebrity status.. to be respected, and even feared.

I'm the most bumble-ing-ness pirate ever to sail but people still blanch at the sight of the Black Pig on the horizonIs the creation of a false perception of someone akin to libel or defamation of character?
That's defamation of character, and very possibly slander.

Libel is printed lies. Like, if a newspaper runs a story about how some person is a serial killer when they aren't.
No...Libel and slander need to be statements of fact. Insinuations and implications are not enough to be the foundation of a defamation suit.
Slander and libel are both written statements which can be documented with loca police and in court..this sounds like fraud..posing as something that they are not..
